How to Shampoo your Carpet in 5 Easy Steps

Whenever you shampoo your carpets, get all the furniture out of the room, if possible, especially the smaller ones from getting your room cluttered. Vacuuming in the room will take away dirt, hair, and dust balls, leaving the carpet ready for shampooing. It will also inflate the mat, making the shampoo more efficient. With a basic carpet stain remover, spray all stains and allow the cleaner to operate as directed.

Make sure that you know how your machine works. There are many kinds of carpet cleaners and they work in a variety of ways. It is important to know how your system works. Some shampooers have a removable clean water tank and others have a fixed water tank. Take care of the maximum fill line and do not add more water than it says. Choose a corner of the room to start, getting the shampooer as close to the walls as possible. Walk from that corner to the wall on the other side and repeat this process across the entire room. The machine may have a visible light or gauge that shows you that the dirty water tank is full. 

Shampoos clean up dirt and debris that can clog drains in wash basins and showers. The toilet has a bigger hose and can handle this material, but spilling water outside is usually the best option when available. If you must pour dirty water into the sink or shower drain, dispose of it slowly with running hot water all the time. This will prevent the drain from clogging. 

Run the shampooer a second time with cold water and no soap. It can take six hours or longer for the carpet to dry completely, depending on the thickness of the carpet and the size of the room. After your final transit, discard all remaining water from both water tanks.
